How to send money to an inmate in TDC
I just sent this information to one of the visitors to the blog, and I thought it might be good information to share with everyone. It’s one of those questions that come up when all of a sudden you learn that your loved one is being sent to TDC. Just how do you help them out? Well visits and letters are important. But, the truth is, getting a little money in your commissary can make your life in TDC a whole lot easier. Buying some hygiene items and food of your own is a very good thing while you are incarcerated. Not to mention stamps and writing paper.
They are making it easier and easier to send money to an inmate. You have some choices. You can mail a money order to TDC or you can do it online or at a couple of places in several ways. Here is what you need to know about it, straight from the TDCJ website.

If I deposit money thru ecomm, can those funds be used for things an inmate needs for the craft shop
How do i get a refund if I sent to the wrong account??
I have never heard of such a thing, as sending money to the wrong person, but that does not mean it couldn’t or has not happened before. My take on that is that TDCJ will not refund the money due it being all kinds of nightmares involved with such a request. I could make you a long list of factual reasons, and some imaginary ones, concerning such stated nightmare, but the main reason will always be the same, it is the sender’s sole responsibility to verify and make sure that such person’s name and number are the correct information given to TDCJ for the deposit of such funds.
Can I send him stamps from my home
No Crystal, you cannot. You can send him money and he will need to buy them in the commissary. Good luck!
No. The reason for that is that TDCJ has a way, canteen/commissary, of allowing person access to such material. You can send stationary item such as paper, envelopes or pre addressed sticker labels to your loved ones from an approved stationary vendor.
I’ve been trying to send money to my dad through jpay, but unfortunately it’s not accepting any of my credit cards I put in. By sending a money order would I send it like if im sending a regular letter and mail it to the address he’s at right now?
No, you address the money order payable to Inmate Trust Fund with the inmate’s CORRECT name and TDCJ # on it, then send a filled out Inmate Trust Fund slip ( you can receive the slip from your loved one, or by sending a self addressed stamp envelope to Inmate Trust Fund PO Box 60 Huntsville, Texas 77342-0060) along with the money order. TDCJ will processed the money order within a few days, then the person can have access to it via the inmate commissary
at his/her unit.
Jose thanks for taking the time to clear things up for these folks!
how do i send a book or the news paper
Hey John, the best way to send a book or magazine is to order it from Amazon and have them send it directly to your inmate. I also think that Half Price Books can send to prisons, but I am not positive. Good luck to you and your friend. Peace ~ Magnum
I have a loved one who is an inmate in TDCJ. I live in Jamaica WI. Western -Union here in jamaica does not facilitate payment to your department. Your 1800 or 1877 toll- free numbers does not work from my location. Money orders are released after 3 months. I would like to use the debit service is there a non- toll -free number that I can call?
Hey Claudeth, This website is just run by me, a private citizen who was a former inmate, so I don’t have a toll-free number or any number. I am not sure what your best bet for getting money to your inmate from Jamaica is. Have you tried JPay.com? That is an online service for sending money to inmates, maybe you can try that one. Also, you can send letters that are like sending email that way, except they print them out and give them to the inmate and he/she will still need to respond to you by a hand-written letter. Good luck to you, hope you get some answers. And hey, Jamaica! So cool, wish I was there on a beach instead of working in a field in the middle of Texas. Peace ~ Magnum
Can anyone tell me what phone number comes up on your phone when they call from TDCJ Garza West?
My son was moved last Thursday and today is Monday I cant find him. I believe he is at Gurney but dont know that for sure. How long will it take for him to show up somewhere? I check the site all day 🙁
I think this is the question that I get the most on here – it takes several days for a person to show up when they catch chain. And that causes the family and friends a lot of stress and fear, understandably. If he caught chain Thursday he will be showing up soon in the system. Hang in there, and peace to you ~ Magnum
I was also wondering, and don’t see the reply if there is one, how are we supposed to address letters? My son was just transferred there 2 days ago and I’m desperate to get a letter to him letting him know we know he got transferred and I am getting money tohether, etc. He’s only 21 and I can’t stand the thought of this without being able to communicate. I just found out he can’t get deodorant even without money????? What do I do? I’m a single mom of four going through a divorce and without a paying job. Is the r some kind of assistance that I can apply for? And how do I request a copy of the book, we’re all doing time? I’ve never dealt with anything like this so I haven’t A SINGLE CLUE. I sure do appreciate this website, that’s for sure. You’re a blessing to me for answering nagging questions that have worrired me. I am fixing to carve out time to sit down and read the whole thing . If somebody could get back to me, I’d appreciate it immensely! !!! This is a very difficult time. God bless you abundantly!! Sincerely, Kari Z. D.
Hey Kari, I just wrote a long-ass reply and the damn computer crashed on me. Damn computers.
Anyway, first you got to find out what unit he is in. Use the Inmate Locator on the homepage of this site to find him. It will take a couple days for him to show up so don’t panic if he doesn’t show up right away. Once you find him, you will see on his record a TDC Number. That goes on the envelope next to his name. Also you will see the unit he is at. Click on the name of the unit and it will open up another window that shows the addresses for all the units.
So you would address the letter like this:
Name – TDC #
Unit Name
Address
City, State zip
You have to have a return address on it too, or they won’t deliver it.
I suggest as a newcomer to this world, you visit http://www.prisontalk.com. Go to the section for Parents of Children in Prison. It has a lot of very good information and support. All these folks are in the same boat, and they all are very helpful to one another.
For the book, “We are all doing time”, you can go to http://www.humankindness.org to order it. I think if you explain your situation they might send it to your son for free. It’s a great book. I highly recommend it and I hope he reads it and takes it to heart.
I do not know of any kind of assistance you can apply for, but just keep writing to your son. It just costs a stamp. If you can send him $20 that will help him out a lot, to get his personal hygiene items. Sounds like you have your hands full with your own situation and although I know you are worried about your son my advise is to keep your focus on keeping yourself and your other kids on the right track, so you can be a good support system for your son who is incarcerated, and be there for him when he is ready to come home. Write to your son a lot, inmates really appreciate hearing from home. It doesn’t need to be long or much news, just everyday stuff. Send a couple photos of the family, he will appreciate those and he can receive photos. He needs hearing from you more than he needs money, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, some money for hygiene items and stamps and envelopes and paper is great, and needed, but he will be alright. You say he is only 21 and I know this sounds harsh but he is going in to this a kid and will come out a man. He will need to figure a lot of things out for himself now. I know parents worry a lot in this situation. My own mom was a wreck over it and I felt terrible about that, but she was OK and I was too. Here I am today writing to you as a free man, with a wife, a son and a new baby girl. My life is good. Don’t despair and hang in there Kari. Your son can do this, and you can too. Keep in touch so we know how y’all are doing. Peace to you and your son ~ Magnum
I’ve been trying for days to send my husband money via western union online, but when I put his information in it says NO SUCH INMATE. To make sure I got all the information right, i double check it on the Inmate Locator homepage. I even called the Western Union and they said same thing. Now I’m lost on what to do. Any suggestions? I know he’s there.
Hey Jenna, maybe it’s a hang up in the Western Union software. If you are sure he is showing up in the Inmate Locator and you have the TDC number right you could try using JPay.com. I know a lot of people have had really good luck with that service. Or if worse comes to worse you could just physically mail him a money order as well. Hopefully by now you have figured it out though. Peace ~ Magnum
Thank You Texas Magnum for letting me how to send money. But when I send letters how is that supposed look on the envelope? And do I put the facility name on there to?
Hey Christina, sorry I didn’t notice your comment before. I guess you have figured it out by now, but yah, you put his name and always put the TDC number. Then put the unit name and address. Also, you have to have a return address or they won’t deliver it. Good luck to you. ~ Magnum
